The Multiple Realizability Thesis is a crucial issue in the debate on mind-body relations as well as the reductive properties. It advocates many different physical neural substrates which can realize the same mental property or type, thus rejecting the identity theory by proving the many-to-one mapping of neural states to mental states. Therefore, the Multiple Realizability Thesis is also seen as a crucial argument in the supporting of non-reductive physicalism in contemporary philosophy of mind. Currently, the theoretical authenticity of multiple realizability has sparked heated discussion again. Can the mind be multiply realized? This question is no longer a logical possibility conceived by philosophers based on intuition, but a new type of inquiry and challenge to the problem of the mind in the context of empirical science. From the perspective of embodied view, this study emphasizes the critical role of the body in shaping and realizing the individual mind. The primary purpose of this study is twofold: firstly, through argumentation, it aims at limiting the theoretical possibility that the mind can be multiply realizable; Secondly, it aims at focusing on the transformation and renovation of the contemporary view of the mind from the perspective of embodiment, as well as examining a series of mental pictures from the embodied perspective. To be specific, the task of this research is to limit the possibility of multiple realizability thesis of mind, to expand and deepen the embodied view of mind, and finally to show the revolutionary changes brought by embodied cognition in the philosophy of science and philosophy of mind by depicting a series of mental images from the perspective of the embodied cognition. The specific research content is as follows: Firstly, the dissertation reviews the theoretical origin and content of Multiple Realizability Thesis, and traces the different development paths of two waves of multiple realizability. In addition, this research analyzes the connotation of “realization” of multiple realizability, disentangles two mainstream scientific explanatory models involved in the concept of “realization” in Multiple Realizability Thesis, i.e., the mechanistic realization explanation and the structural realization explanation. Secondly, the research portrays several typical delimitation criteria for multiple realization, namely the “same but different” delimitation criteria, as well as the mechanism and hierarchy delimitation criteria, then evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of each scheme, the research points out that the delimitation criteria of Multiple Realizability Thesis are still difficult to be applied to the mind. Thirdly, the dissertation focuses on the characteristics of the mind from an embodied perspective, attempting to explore the theoretical possibilities of the conditions under which multiple realizations can be accomplished. After thoroughly exploring the dramatic changes in the cognitive scientific view of mind from an embodied perspective, this research places the landing point for examining of multiple realizability in the Constraints Theory. By sorting out the inevitable constraint, internal brain constraint, and embodied constraint routes in the evolution of life, we connect three chains of evidence on the evolution of life, brain development, and body constraints. The research suggests that human-specific physiological structures and bodily experiences have played a crucial role in shaping the human mind, the evolution of mind is inevitably constrained and irreversible, and thus fundamentally limits the ways in which the mind can be realized in multiple ways. Finally, the dissertation jumps out of the framework of multiple realization and focuses on a series of mental visions from the embodied perspective. By focusing on the theoretical connotation, development status, and scientific evidence of the embodied mind view, a more systematically grasp the transformation and renovation of the contemporary mind view from the perspective of the embodied mind can be made. On this basis, it further examines the various challenges brought by the brain-computer interface technology to the embodied mind, and responds to various doubts about whether the mind can be extended. The mind is fundamentally embodied, even if the future technology can allow the mind to escape from the body, the body is still the root of the world that ultimately provides individuals with meaning, structure, and possibility. |
