Adolescence is a critical period for individual physical and mental development. Individuals who use short videos excessively are prone to short video addiction, which cause a series of psychological, physical and social consequences. Teenagers use short videos extremely frequently. The "2021 National Research Report on Internet Usage of Minors" shows that the proportion of junior high school students who often use short videos in my country is 61.8%; a survey of ordinary middle school students shows that 16.7% of the individuals used Tik Tok for more than 3 hours within a week.
Peers are an important factor affecting adolescent short video addiction, mobile phone addiction and other behavioral addictions, more and more interactions with peers are the main reason for adolescent addictive behaviors. This study focuses on the combined effect and specific mechanism of peer relationship and deviant peer affiliation, the two important variables in the peer system, on adolescent short video addiction.
In this study, the Short video addiction Scale, Peer relationship scale, Deviant peer affiliation scale and Fear of missing out scale were used to measure, and the data of 640 junior high school students from 3 schools in Nanning, Guangxi Province were collected, including 359 male students. The average age of the subjects was 14.24 years old. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, regression analysis, polynomial regression and response surface analysis and other methods were used to analyze the respective and combined effects of junior high school students' peer relationship and deviant peer affiliation on short video addiction, as well as the influence mechanism. The study found that:
(1) Peer relationship significantly and negatively predicts short video addiction. Deviant peer affiliation significantly and negatively predicts short video addiction. The more Deviant peer affiliation is, the higher the tendency of short video addiction is.
(2) Peer relationship and deviant peer affiliation combined affect adolescent short video addiction. When two variables matched, compared with the situation of less deviant peer and good peer relationship, the worse the peer relationship and the more deviant peer, the higher the tendency of short video addiction. When two variables mismatched, compared with the situation of less deviant peer and poor peer relationship, the better the peer relationship and the more deviant peer, the higher the tendency of short video addiction. Besides, the influence of deviant peer affiliation on short video addiction is stronger than that of peer relationship.
(3) Peer relationship and deviant peer affiliation can indirectly combined affect adolescent short video addiction by the fear of missing out, the fear of missing out plays a partial mediating role.
