He is a religious and loyal worshipper of the natural world, who holds firm faith in the omnipotent power of nature. However, as a member of the society, he is also confused and perplexed by the true life, being immersed in deep sorrow by the malevolent force of nature. In fact, nature does not always endow the poet with joy and comfort and the poet’s sentiments on nature do not always keep consistent, either. The “Lucy Poems” are regarded as the finest lyrical poems of Wordsworth. They have described the whole process of Lucy’s growth, perfection, and death. By depicting her simple but dignified characters, the poems indicate that she has a special relation with nature. The remembrance of Lucy is actually a reflection of the poet’s contemplation on the relationship between mankind and nature and his meditation on the circle of life, which reveals his inconsistent sentiments on nature. Thus, analysing the “Lucy Poems” on a full scale will not only help us to understand the theme of the poems accurately but will also support us to comprehend the nature view of the poet profoundly. The paper begins with the analysis of the “Lucy Poems” from a comprehensive perspective. By discriminating and analyzing the contents of the poems, exploring and interpreting the use of images as well as consulting and reevaluating the remarks of other scholars, it will make efforts to reveal and explicate the themes of the “Lucy Poems” in a more acceptable way. Then, it demonstrates the poet’s inconsistent sentiment on nature, and meanwhile, explains the possible causes of it. After that, it discloses Wordsworth’s nature view, which is conflict and complicated.
