In today's fast-paced world, young adults are increasingly faced with pressures. Among them, "empty-nest youth," who live alone and single, are more prone to feelings of loneliness. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) emerges as a psychological counseling model that primarily focuses on direct interventions for symptoms, emphasizing the reduction of symptom impact on individuals while addressing symptom-individual relations, thereby enhancing psychological flexibility. ACT enriches the understanding of loneliness through a functional contextualism perspective and analyzes the etiology of psychological rigidity patterns from the vantage point of the hexaflex model. This case study presents the intervention process and outcomes of employing ACT to address loneliness in an "empty-nest youth."

The study recruited individuals aged 22 to 35 identified as "empty-nest youth." Screening was conducted using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire, Social Anxiety Scale, Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire, and interviews, ultimately selecting a participant for the study. The researcher conducted 12 ACT sessions with the participant, twice a week, lasting 50 to 60 minutes each. At different stages of counseling, assessments were administered, including the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, and the Chinese version of the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire, followed by a post-counseling follow-up to ascertain the participant's psychological state and track the effectiveness of the counseling.

After 12 sessions, the participant showed significant improvements in loneliness and emotional issues caused by negative evaluations, demonstrated an enhanced ability to notice and accept suffering, and developed adaptive emotional regulation strategies. These changes fostered commitment and action in the participant, significantly boosting psychological flexibility. Moreover, improvements were observed in the six core psychological processes emphasized within the ACT framework, including dominance of conceptualized past and future, lack of value clarification, and excessive reliance on the conceptualized self.

This article preliminarily validates the efficacy of ACT in intervening against loneliness among "empty-nest youth" through the counseling process and outcomes for a case troubled by loneliness. It offers a reference for mental health practitioners.
