Toni Morrison is one of the greatest novelists in the world. She was the first Afro-American female writer to receive Nobel Prize for Literature. Beloved is considered as her most famous work, and its various themes, feminism, significant symbols, jazz style and narrative techniques have been constantly studied by different people. This thesis attempts to analyze the themes of Beloved from the perspective of writing techniques. By analyzing Morrison’s sophisticated writing skills from different aspects, this thesis shows that Beloved is a book that connects personal antecedents to racial destiny. It recalls the true history of black exploitation into the fate of the race, exposes all kinds of oppression, and stimulates humanity by showing true and touching love between parents and children.
This thesis consists of four parts. The first part introduces some background information about the author, plot summary of the novel and the subject of the thesis. The second part analyzes narrative strategies of Beloved, including non-linear narration, multi-narrative point of view, and repetition of motifs and stories. By using those techniques, Toni Morrison shows readers a trauma aspect of American history which many wish to bury but will never be forgotten. It reveals the white slaveholders’ distorted human nature and unimaginable sufferings of the black slaves. The non-linear narration and constant repetition show that the freed slaves continue being haunted by the past miserable memories and can hardly start a new life. The third part analyzes Morrison’s writing techniques from the perspective of interior monologue and stream of consciousness. These two kinds of writing techniques are the most powerful and straight indictment of the atrocities of the white slaveholders. The fourth part draws some conclusion that Beloved is a great novel which reveals a forgotten history that is important to both white and black. Toni Morrison’s sophisticated writing techniques accurately show the novel’s themes and are worth studying.
