Eugenics was founded in England, developed in the United States and prevailed in China in the early 20th century. Returning to the historical scene where modern Chinese intellectuals accepted Eugenics, we find that there was an inextricable link between Eugenics and Literature in the intellectual and literary circles a hundred years ago. Eugenics, as its name implies, is a discipline that studies how to produce superior offspring and achieve racial improvement. In modern China where procreation cannot yet be completely separated from love and marriage, Eugenics has opened up a new discussion space on the topics related to sexual relationship such as love, mate selection, marriage and procreation. As love and marriage are the core themes of modern Chinese literature, this thesis attempts to reconstruct the genealogy of modern Chinese love under the influence of Anglo-American Eugenics by combining the discourse of eugenics in literary texts. Meanwhile, through the interdisciplinary research of Eugenics and Literature, it re-examines the interaction between scientific discourse and literary practice. This thesis is divided into four chapters in addition to the introduction and conclusion. The first chapter describes the collision between Eugenics and modern Chinese literature. The first section analyzes the translation method and historical context of the concept of "eugenics". The second section focuses on the discourse transformation between modern Chinese literature and Eugenics. The second chapter discusses how Eugenics is related to the theme of "love" in modern Chinese literature. The first section introduces Zhou Jianren's translation of Eugenics. The second section analyzes how Zhou Jianren, who was both a translator of Eugenics and an advocate of "freedom of love", used the scientific nature of Eugenics to justify "love marriage" and formed "Eugenics of Love". The third section constructs the discussion space of modern Chinese marriage and love based on the literary practice of Women's Magazine (1921-1926). The third chapter analyzes the transformation of traditional "good wife and good mother" by Eugenics. The first section introduces Chinese eugenicist Pan Guangdan's "new motherhood", which was inspired by Eugenics. The second section analyzes the eugenic discourse behind the "anti-celibacy" statement. The third section discusses Bing Xin's novels and explores the role of Eugenics in shaping the image of modern Chinese women. The fourth chapter discusses the paradoxical shift of Eugenics discourse in the love narratives of New Sensation School. The first section examines the influence of Eugenics on the aesthetic conception of the modern Chinese body. The second section focuses on the love writing of New Sensation and dissects Eugenics as a buzzword, the eugenic metaphor of modern girl and animalistic sexual relationship. The third section illustrates the ambiguous correspondence between New Sensation and Eugenics by depicting the acceptance and resistance of New Sensation School to Eugenics. |
