Nurses typically work in an environment of high stress, high risk, and complex interpersonal relationships and their daily work involves handling various complicated medical tasks, which leads to long-term high levels of tension, more negative emotions, and physical exhaustion. Nurses experience more psychological health issues than the general population, with anxiety being the most common and seeing the highest incidence. The mental well-being of nurses is of high concern for the quality of healthcare services and directly impacts their professional performance and the outcome of their treatment. Therefore, this study focuses on the anxiety of nurses with the following research objectives: (1) to explore the current status of anxiety and positive emotions among nurses and the relationship between the two through a questionnaire survey; (2) based on the results of the questionnaire survey, to develop a group counseling program for alleviating anxiety in nurses by drawing on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions and to validate its effectiveness through empirical research.
The research includes Study 1 and Study 2. Study 1 used a questionnaire survey with quantitative analysis to understand the status quo of positive emotions and anxiety among nurses as well as the relationship between the two. The results showed that the occurrence rate of anxiety among nurses was 42.72%, with an average score of 11.39 ± 13.56, higher than the general population. The positive emotions and anxiety of nurses are negatively correlated (p=0.001), β=-1.54, t=-7.76.
Study 2 was divided into two sub-studies. In Study 2a, based on a mass review of studies on anxiety intervention, an art group psychological counseling program for alleviating nurses’ anxiety was designed and developed based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions. After preliminary validation of effectiveness through a pre-experiment, the researchers adjusted and optimized the program drawing on the leader’s reflection, experts’ supervision and advice, and group members’ feedback, and finally formed an art group counseling program for alleviating anxiety in nurses. In Study 2b, the group counseling program set in Study 2a was implemented among nurses through group intervention. Under a 2×3 experimental design, results of a quantitative analysis showed that the program had a significant effect on alleviating nurses’ anxiety. The results of a follow-up measurement one month later showed that the group intervention had a good continuous effect.
Results showed:(1) anxiety is prevalent among nurses with their anxiety scores higher than the general population; positive emotions can predict an opposite trend in anxiety (Study 1); (2) art group counseling programs designed based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions can effectively enhance positive emotions and alleviate nurses’ anxiety, and the effects of anxiety intervention can be maintained for more than a month.
In summary, nurses' anxiety is the most common , and a single online art group intervention can effectively alleviate nurses' anxiety and have a good maintenance effect, which should continue to develop and promote.
A single online art group counseling based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions design can effectively alleviate nurses' anxiety and have a good maintenance effect, which can continue to be developed and promoted.
