The Hunger Games is the first volume of the Hunger Games trilogy, created by American writer Suzanne Collins, and others are Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Since the first volume was published in 2008, the trilogy has ascended to the bestseller list for a quite long time, and the movies based on the novel have succeeded at the box office. Its popularity comes from its fantasy of science fiction and dystopia elements. This essay tries to answer the three questions: In a society of advanced material civilization, why is hunger still a problem in some districts? What elements does dystopian society have? What implications can readers get? By illustrating the meaning of dystopia and analyzing the novel, finally a conclusion is made: Firstly, hunger is the way of controlling people by totalitarians. Both fear of hunger and hope of survival are cast upon citizenry. Secondly, dystopian society includes advanced material civilization, totalitarianism, and the loss of humanity. Thirdly, the courage and the revolting spirit are what readers should learn.
