蚝壳墙历史悠久、源远流长，起源时间不晚于唐代，至南宋逐渐兴盛，在明清时期成为岭南地区的常见建筑。其风靡原因一则与岭南生蚝养蚝、原材料丰富易得有关；二则寄托了岭南人民对美好生活的向往，表达了“好市”、“豪富”之意；三则大户人家表达追忆祖先、慎终追远之意，乐意使用蚝壳作为宗祠建筑材料；四则其本身的多种功能适应岭南地区气候特点及人民生活之需。由于政治、自然、社会、技术革新等多种原因，蚝壳墙逐渐消失，目前主要保存于珠三角地区的古村落中，没有得到完善的保护。相当一部分广东民众对蚝壳墙了解甚少，故对蚝壳墙的功能、发展历史、背后的文化精神和建筑艺术等有待挖掘和宣传。

Due to various reasons such as political, natural, social, and technological innovation, oyster shell walls have gradually disappeared and are currently mainly preserved in ancient villages in the Pearl River Delta region, without proper protection. A considerable number of Guangdong residents have little understanding of oyster shell walls, so their functions, development history, cultural spirit, and architectural art behind oyster shell walls need to be explored and promoted.
