Frank O’Connor is a novelist with over 150 works. The majority of O’Connor works relate to his life and experiences. “My Oedipus Complex” is one of his most well-known short stories, which has humorous language and life-like characters. This particular story is known to have more of a personal focus. This could possibly be because the story was written as internal focalization- what narrator says equal what characters know. O’Connor’s successful use of narrative point of view and successful shift in narrative from internal focalization to zero focalization- what narrator says surpass what characters know- makes the novel interesting, vivid and humorous. With multiple narrative skills, he had also established a special narrative point of view- insider narration (Chen, 2006). In this paper, I analyze the narrative point of view in "My Oedipus Complex", including three aspects: internal focalization, dramatic irony and the shift in narrative. Also, I combine a theoretical analysis with specific information in the novel, in order to give a deeper and clearer view of the importance of narrative. The goal of this paper is to discuss the significance of the narrative point of view and put forward some suggestions on how to use the narrative point of view successfully. This analysis of “My Oedipus Complex” indicates that the internal focalization gives readers more sense of reality and produces strong emotions. O’Connor also successfully shifted in narrative from internal focalization to zero focalization, which expands the narrative capacity and enriches the novel. By using the dramatic irony, the author successfully combines the child’s words and adult’s thinking.
