本文选刘勰《文心雕龙•谐隐》之“隐”分三部分进行论述。中国文化中的隐喻思维促生了隐语。它最初以无意识的娱乐形式流行于民间，大约于春秋战国之际走入士大夫的生活圈子并被广泛应用于外交、劝谏等场合。当时的一些文人也或多或少地受到了隐语的影响，他们开始有意模仿这种形式进行创作，如庄子、荀子等。之后由宫廷专职文娱人员优将其带入宫廷，受到君主们的喜好和大力提倡从而也影响了宫廷文人的创作。“言语侍从之臣”以娱乐的态度运用隐语，戏笑之余仍保有一丝微讽的意味，如宋玉、东方朔等人的文字、行为。隐语的渊源甚深，影响甚远。绪论主要梳理隐语的研究状况，交代本文的研究方法、目的及意义。第一节试图在思维层面分析隐语产生的文化背景，以《周易》之“言—象—意”所确立的“立象以尽意”的表达方式，《诗经》之比、兴及“春秋笔法”所开创的“微言大义”、“婉而多讽”的中国政治修辞学传统为例阐述中国文化中的象喻思维对隐语出现所产生的影响。第二节通过分析隐语在先秦政治隐喻活动中的应用及特点，试分析其娱乐性、讽喻性、交际性等方面的功能及对当时某些行为方式所产生的影响。第三节由行为而文体，具体至文体层面，分析隐语的流行对庄子的文章风格、荀子《赋》篇、宋玉赋、俳谐文等文体的影响。本文试图对隐语创生之文化背景、在上古时期政治隐喻行为中的应用及其功能、特点和对当时文人创作所产生的影响等方面有个比较清楚的交代。
