Dramatic monologue is one of the important genres of English poetry which was developed in the Victorian age mainly by the poet Robert Browning. Entering into the 1900s, dramatic monologue has attracted more attention of modernist poets represented by T.S. Eliot. This research compares the differences between Browning’s “Andrea del Sarto” and Eliot’s “Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” in the framework of time and space narrative, shedding light on the issue of modernity behind the time-space consciousness. The time consciousness is revealed by the way of narrative and the dramatic conflicts, and the space consciousness is revealed by the dramatic scenes and the interaction between the speaker and the listener. The flow of time-space consciousness in dramatic monologues from Browning to Eliot reflects the rupture of human relations. Seeking for an escape from the collapsing real-life world, the individual turns to the closed internal world where the space and time are deconstructed. The relationship between man and man is gradually alienated, and the relationship between man and self is then strengthened. The change of time-space consciousness not only demonstrates the transformation from Victorian convention to modernism, but reflects the process of the emergence and maturity of modernity.
