王安忆的小说《庸常之辈》反映了1980年代初青年生活中一系列需要解决的物质、组织与精神问题，刻画了普通青年渺小、无助的自我感。新时期初期，工人阶级的社会地位发生了变迁，工厂内部的管理制度和思政工作也没能建立个体与集体物质之外更深的精神、政治连带，使部分青年将精神需求转移到私人生活和物质因素上。面对这一问题，作家受限于自己的知识分子眼光和有限的工厂经验没法以更内在的方式理解青年的精神世界，上一代作家拥有的社会主义经验同样不能回应普通人的身心危机。对青年自我感受的忽视最终进一步促成了理想主义精神在青年群体中的衰退，暴露出当时主导性话语在回应青年自我感受和身心困境的不足之处。

Anyi Wang's novel The Ordinary People reflects a series of material, organizational and spiritual problems that need to be solved in the youth life in the early 1980s. It also depicts the small and helpless self-consciousness of ordinary youth. In the early period of 1980s, the social status of the working class has changed, and the management system, ideological and political work in the factory haven't established the deeper spiritual and political connection between the individual and the collective, which makes some young people transferred their spiritual needs to private life and material factors. Facing this problem, the writer is limited by her intellectual vision and insufficient factory experience, so that cannot understand the spiritual world of youth in a more internal way. The socialist experience of the previous generation also cannot respond to the physical and mental crisis of ordinary people. The neglect of young people's self-feelings eventually contributed to the decline of idealism among young people, and exposed the shortcomings of the mainstream ideology in responding to youth's self-feelings and mental difficulties.
