During the pandemic, consumer stockpiling behavior became a social focal point, with individuals eagerly stockpiling goods and businesses keen on 'scarcity marketing'. Consequently, this research explores the mechanism by which perceived scarcity influences consumer stockpiling behavior, examining the mediating role of scarcity attribution and the moderating role of self-control, based on the context of scarcity. Study 1, by recruiting 608 valid subjects through Credamo and employing correlational research methods, examined the relationship between perceived scarcity and stockpiling behavior. The findings indicate a significant positive correlation between perceived scarcity and consumer stockpiling behavior, with scarcity attribution playing a mediating role. Study 2 involved 363 valid subjects recruited through Credamo, and employed a recall of personal product scarcity experience as a manipulation method to investigate the mechanism of perceived scarcity's impact on stockpiling behavior. The results demonstrate that scarcity attribution serves as a mediator in the influence of perceived scarcity on stockpiling behavior, with self-control having a moderating effect. Specifically, in individuals with high self-control, the degree of impact of perceived scarcity on scarcity attribution is higher. Study 3, recruiting 397 valid subjects through Credamo and using imagined limited-time promotional purchasing as a manipulation method, examined the mechanism of perceived scarcity's effect on stockpiling behavior. The findings reveal that in individuals with high self-control, scarcity attribution plays a mediating role in the influence of perceived scarcity on stockpiling behavior. The stronger the perceived scarcity, the stronger the tendency towards scarcity attribution and stockpiling behavior. Collectively, these studies found that perceived scarcity significantly positively predicts hoarding behavior, with scarcity attribution serving as a mediator and self–control moderates the relationship between perceived scarcity and scarcity attribution. |
