Denial of Ambiguities in Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus |

The image of Faustus has taken many forms, but in all versions, Faustus is always a rebellious intellectual nonconformist who aims to set up a new world out of his ideologies. In Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, the aspiring hero denies his conventional identity and reaches for illusory magnificence, only to be faced with self-doubt and despair in the end. Orthodox readings of the play often consider Faustus’s stupidity and his ignorance as the main reason for his downfall. However, through a close reading of the text and a precise analysis of Faustus' condition, this thesis argues that Faustus’s downfall comes about as a result of his fear and denial of ambiguities. However, it is in the hill of ambiguities that arises the spirit of adventure. Faustus’s tragedy probably results from his inability to recognize that mysteries, like love, freedom or life itself, can only be experienced but never to be explained. Denying the ambiguities obliterates the possibility of unifying love, desire and tenderness, and thus obliterates life itself.
