The "Beijing Drift" is an important phenomenon of Chinese society and culture in the 21st century, reflecting the changing landscape and cultural reconstruction in the process of urbanization, as well as its internal contradictory values and concepts. In essence, "drifting" is a philosophical situation, which concerns the survival and development of human beings. The characters enter the capital city and meet with the figurative grandeur, with a huge and powerful hand pushing them to the new world, playing a role in what Benedict Anderson calls "the imaginary community", which is incomprehensible and difficult for onlookers to emulate, experiencing a "bohemian In what Benedict Anderson calls "imaginary communities", they play roles that are incomprehensible to onlookers and difficult to emulate, experiencing a "bohemian" sense of exile and belonging. The narrative of Beijing Drift responds to the great changes since the new century, making vivid historical scenes and complex and diverse social elements emerge before the eyes of the world.
In the collision with the literary mirror, Shi Yifeng, a native of Beijing, continues to focus on the underclass of Beijing drifters, showing his individual style of writing. In the introduction, we define the concept of "Beijing drifters" and sort out the evolution of writing in Beijing's urban space, and on this basis, we clarify the idea of this paper: taking Shi Yifeng's novel as the research object and literary and cultural research as the main method. The first chapter, "The Beijing Drift Narrative Style of Shi Yifeng's Novels," traces Shi Yifeng's creative style, narrative persona change, and rewriting strategy of Chinese stories from the perspective of Beijing language, Beijing flavor, and Beijing drift theme.
The second chapter, "The Characters of Beijing Drifters in Shi Yifeng's Novels," traces the flow of time and focuses on the foreigners who came to Beijing through different paths, from the rural migrants who stayed in Beijing through relatives' defection and entry index during the reform era, to the elite migrants who started their own businesses and pursued their dreams in Beijing at the turn of the century, to the temporary migrants in the post-Olympic era, along with the rapid transformation of China's urban With the rapid transformation of China's urban areas, the "New Beijingers" have been officially certified. In a "historicized" perspective, the characters of Beijing drifters under Shi Yifeng's writing grow in accordance with the above three nodes, showing a complex evolutionary process. The exploration of the individual's seeming proximity to or distance from Beijing is itself a "text", full of classic "literary moments", with threads of romance/legend running through it.
The third chapter, "The Identity Anxiety of Beijing Drifters in Shi Yifeng's Novels," emphasizes the exploration of the characters' hearts and minds, and how Shi Yifeng explains the identity anxiety of the underclass people in the new social structure and historical changes, and tells the fate of Chinese people in this era. Looking back from the perspective of social development, the "Beijing drifters" choose Beijing again and again under the specific chance of the times, and become "tied" to it. Whether it is the marginality embedded in the souls of generations of expatriates, the dependence of the school drifters on the university campus, or the confusion of the current part-timers, the identity anxiety of the characters shows the resistance, compromise or adaptation of the city people to the outside world.
The fourth chapter, "The Spatial Politics of Beijing Drift in Shi Yifeng's Novels," focuses on the stories of Beijing drifters in the context of "literary geography" and the positioning of characters in Beijing's urban space. Theoreticians such as David Harvey and Edward W. Sawyer provide an inspiring theoretical perspective on spatial justice. The narrative of Beijing Drift starts from the Beijing space, and weaves the work with the millennium and the Olympic year as nodes. The dramatic changes in Beijing urban space are synchronized with the "modernization of the city" before the millennium and the "cosmopolitan" construction in anticipation of the Olympic Games. The connection between "city and people" is integrated into the discourse of aesthetic modernity, and together they experience the excitement or confusion of modernization. The reader is able to understand the division of inner-city space by moving through the hutongs and urban villages, and to understand the decentralization of peripheral space by stopping in suburban counties, and to rethink the expression of "community spirit" by peeking at the separation of class space through the setting of the "Five Rings". Shi Yifeng does not stop at the "landscape" of Beijing, but highlights the political meaning and the brand of the times of the urban space, constructing a new effective path for urban literature to go beyond the inherent landscape description and desire writing.
The concluding remarks summarize the research results of Shi Yifeng's novel in the perspective of the Beijing drift narrative. As a writer who actively enters the world, in order to observe Beijing more comprehensively and objectively, he responds to the question of how to respond to the changes of reality with fictional words through the rich sequence of characters, the identity anxiety in the cultural rupture, and the perspective of the inner space in the capital city. The phenomenon of Beijing drifters reveals a universal survival situation, and Shi Yifeng especially mentions the diasporic state of Chinese people under the modernization process, which is a topic of great concern, and this paper hopes to open up more research perspectives and thinking space.
