Set in an alternating space of the Victorian period and the contemporary era, A. S. Byatt’s work Possession: A Romance portrays female characters as either Victorian female writers or twentieth-century female literary critics. This thesis intends to study the portraits of female writers and female intellectuals in Possession based on the previous relevant studies through close-reading analysis to explore main feminist themes of female autonomy and creativity and Byatt’s theory of literary creation and criticism. Byatt reveals the difficulties confronting the female writers in the Victorian era through various genres of intertexts, mixing diaries, letters, poems, and fairy tales. Contemporary scholars are also characterized by providing their focus on literary study and their connection with the Victorian writers. Through the depiction of female writers and intellectuals, Byatt’s writing of Possession constructs a conversation between the Victorian past and the twentieth-century scholarship, reinforces the importance of reading over interpreting and creation outweighing criticism, and creates intense reading pleasures for her readers.
