本文以社会学和历史学的研究方法，以近代教育家严修为研究对象，通过对其私人生活和社会交往的分析，透视处于传统向近代转型期知识分子的思想与行为特征，并映射近代天津社会政治、经济、教育文化的时代变迁。全文分为三章。第一章讨论了天津开埠前后的社会变迁与地域文化特色，在这个大背景下，分析近代天津知识分子群体的产生过程，以及严修从传统中脱胎而出向近代过渡的转变条件；第二章以严修的家世、家庭生活、经济生活与私人生活等四个方面为切入点，反映严修这一类具有浓厚过渡色彩的知识分子之人文与个性，揭示其中西杂糅、新旧兼具的属性特征；第三章通过把严修放在宦海生涯和教育事业两个空间，以其人际交往的群体为对象，分析他在不同网络空间下的价值观念、复杂身份及社会地位状况。最后，以严修晚年创办崇化学会这一回归传统的表现，揭示脱胎于传统向近代转型的知识分子，他们在社会变迁的过程中兼具新旧而不出儒教之范围。其旧大于新的表现，是时代赋予这个过渡期知识阶层思想特征上的必然反映。

This thesis utilities the research methods such as sociological and the history, takes modern educator Yan Xiu as a research object, analyses its personal life and the social association, shows theperspective to the intellectual's thought and behavioral characteristic in the tradition to the modern transition period, and reflect the time vicissitude of political, economic, education and culture in modern Tianjin.There are three chapters in this thesis. First chapter discusses the social vicissitude and the region characteristic around Tianjin′s opening.Under this great background, analyses creation process of mordern Tianjin′s intellectual group, as well as YanXiu′s transforming condition from tradition to the modern times. Second chapters take four aspect such as Yan Xiu 's family background , the family life , economic life and private life as point of penetration , reflect Yan Xiu's humanity and individuality of the kind of the intellectual who has the deep transition color , which characteristic complex China and the West and contains both the new and the old .Third chapter put Yan Xiu on two space such as the feudal bureaucracy and educational career, take his human communication group as the object, under the different cyberspace analyzes his values, the complex status and the social position .Final, according to ChongHua academy established by Yan Xiu, which is one returning tradition behaviour, explores intellectual in the tradition to the modern transition period, who concurrently new and old in the social vicissitude process but do not leave scope of the Confucianism. Whose old greater than new behaviour, is the inevitably reflectionat that the times gives this transiens stratum of intellectual in thought characteristic.
