This study utilized eye-tracking technology to investigate the influence of individual physiological arousal on facial attention and memory performance. By comparing pupillary responses, total gaze duration on faces, disengagement duration from faces, facial recognition accuracy, and reaction times under conditions with auditory stimulation (physiological arousal) and without auditory stimulation (no physiological arousal), we aimed to unveil the role of physiological arousal in facial cognitive processing. The findings indicated that between 150-1750ms of facial image presentation, the pupillary dilation under the physiological arousal condition was significantly greater than that under the no physiological arousal condition, suggesting that auditory stimulation effectively manipulated physiological arousal. However, there were no significant differences in total gaze duration on faces and disengagement duration from faces between the two conditions. In the recognition task, the reaction time under the physiological arousal condition was significantly longer than that under the no physiological arousal condition, but the accuracy rates showed no significant difference. Overall, this study found no evidence to support the notion that physiological arousal affects facial attention and memory. Future research should consider using emotionally charged faces and adopting other paradigms to further explore the influence of physiological arousal on facial attention and memory. |
