One of the most important features of Olive Kitteridge is its description of a number of suicides and some other incidents linked with suicide. This paper aims to look into these contents of suicide and make an analysis of related texts: A Little Burst, Tulips, Security, River, Incoming Tide and Starvation, in order to have a deeper understanding of the fiction. There are three main parts: firstly, the suicidal tendencies of several members in Olive's family which linked with each other and ran through the whole fiction; secondly, Kevin Coulson's plan of suicide which was prevented by Olive before his practice and his mother's suicide in Incoming Tide; thirdly, Nina White's early death resulting from her long-term starvation and heart damage caused by anorexia in Starvation. Humans' demand for various desires, especially for love and being loved is the focus of the author. In addition, this paper makes viable comparison between messages in the fiction and related psychological research findings on both physically and mentally suicidal movements, with the intention to learn more about the relationship between the real world and fictional worlds created in literary works.
