Jin Yong is a great master of Chinese Wuxia novels in the twentieth century. His Wuxia novels are widely read and enjoyed by Chinese people all over the world. Frequently referred to as cultural novels or cultural encyclopedia, Jin’s novels constantly provoke Chinese people’s cultural resonance. That, in a large measure, explains the runaway success of Jin Yong and all his fifteen works. Not only that, the influence of his Wuxia novels is such that the Chinese mass media successively carry on the “relay race” of spreading Chinese Wuxia culture in forms of video games, adapted films and TV series. While Jin’s Wuxia novels remain phenomenally popular within China, they are seldom heard of in English-speaking countries. Despite the fact that a few English translations on this subject have been introduced to the western readers in recent years, Chinese Wuxia novels indeed have never been abroad in a real sense, let alone the Chinese Wuxia culture that is represented in them. This thesis attempts to conduct a case study on the English translation The Book and the Sword. By comparing the original novel Shujianenchoulu and Earnshaw’s translation, the author reveals two major features of the English translation, and explains the reasons for them. On the ground of these discussions, a conclusion as to the actual effect of this “journey to the west” will be drawn in the last part. The thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, the author focuses on the historical development of Xia and its inner meaning as well as its influence, and proposes an English translation for the phrase “Wuxia xiaoshuo”. It will also be argued why Wuxia and Wuxia culture are a distinctly Chinese phenomenon. Chapter two is literature review of English translations on Wuxia literature and studies on Jin Yong’s Wuxia novels. Chapter three introduces a different theory of culture and the culture structure on which the next chapter of the thesis will be based. Chapter four compares the original novel and its English translation with examples. Chapter five is the analysis based on the previous studies and also the principal part of this thesis in which the author first presents her findings and then gives reasons for them. Besides, a new concept is introduced and suggested in this chapter as a strategy to translate Chinese Wuxia novels. Finally, the author comes to the conclusion that the English translation The Book and the Sword does not arrive at its destination, its “journey to the west” has not yet fulfilled. The Chinese Wuxia culture contained in the novel Shujianenchoulu is not adequately transmitted to the western readers.
