The Lost Bookshop is a novel by Irish bestselling author Evie Woods, which mainly focuses on the intertwined fates of the three protagonists Opaline, Martha, and Henry, over a vanished bookstore and a series of ups and downs that occurred in the search for that bookstore.
This paper is a report based on the English-Chinese translation practice of The Lost Bookshop (excerpt). In the novel, there are many characters and dialogues, so this report mainly focuses on the principles and strategies of translating dialogues in the novel. The dialogues between characters in the novel are of a daily nature, and the communication in daily life is bound to be colloquial, so the translator should strive to restore this characteristic in the translation. Therefore, “to be colloquial” is the macro principle of translating dialogues in this practice. On this basis, more detailed dialogue translation principles should be established based on the characteristics of the novel as a literary genre. Characters, plot and environment are the three essential elements of a novel, which for no doubt interact with the dialogues in it. Therefore, when translating the dialogues in the text, the translation should also be based on the specific characteristics of different dialogues so as to match and echo the “three elements” of the novel. The specific translation strategies are as follows: In order to enrich the characters, the identity and personality of the speaker should be emphasized; In order to perfect the plot of the story, the context and the implied meaning of the speaker should be added; In order to restore the environment of the dialogue, the translation should conform to the situation when the dialogue takes place.
This report consists of five parts. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the text selected and its characteristics; Chapter 2 outlines the role of dialogue in novels and the current research status of translation of novel dialogues; Chapter 3 discusses the principles of dialogue translation in this practice; Chapter 4 discusses the specific strategies of dialogue translation from the three aspects of characters, plot and environment through concrete examples from the translation practice; The conclusion summarizes this practice report and reflects on the existing shortcomings.
