In The Great Gatsby written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, there is a dialogue scene that can be seen as a basis for presenting various examples to language learners. Depending on each character, can also see the personality of various people, their way of speaking, and their attitude toward the other person through a single word of dialogue between various people. The reason why this paper examined the dialogue of characters in the novel The Great Gatsby citing the CP(Cooperative Principle), is one of philosopher Grice’s principle, which clarifies the concept that meaning can be conveyed when two people cooperate, even if it is not logical implication in the conversation between the speaker and the listener, means to contribute as much as required according to the purpose or direction of the conversation. It is to analyze various scenes and show their personalities and characteristics. The research materials carefully selected 20 of the main characters’ dialogues in the novel. The purpose of this data also shows how the main characters’ dialogue scenes were matched in terms of Cooperative Principle, Cooperative Principle not only help readers infer the main character’s intentional meaning, but also help them to understand and get more information about the entire story.

This study carefully selected the dialogue of the characters and analyzed the meaning of the words they wanted to express within the framework of Cooperative Principle. In this paper, I would like to explain an analysis based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle based on the judgment that it explains important theoretical principle that explain the connection between character’s speech and the main characters, especially in dialogue. And the dialogue will be the basis for building relationships between characters and managing character’s image and also help to understanding more deepen and provide reference for analyzing the language in English literary works from the perspective of pragmatics.
