The novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic (hereafter referred to as the Covid-19 epidemic) is the most serious public health event in nearly 100 years. In the field of career development, uncertainty and ambiguity characterize the world of work in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic. According to Super's (1980) life-span life-space career development theory, the different life roles that individuals assume at the same time interact with each other. When employees in an organization assume parental roles in the family, insecurity in their work environment affects their career values as parents, and through their career parenting behaviors (support, interference, barriers to engagement), they in turn affect their children's attitudes toward ambiguity in the career development process. Career decision ambiguity aversion is an individual's negative avoidance behavior toward ambiguity in career decision making, a tendency to fear and avoid ambiguity, and career decision ambiguity aversion can temporarily relieve decision stress by avoiding ambiguity. It has been shown that career decision ambiguity aversion is detrimental to individuals' career development (Dai Xiwen, 2021; Zhang Xin et al., 2018; Xu, 2021a, 2021b, 2022), and its family formation mechanism is not clear. This study investigates whether parents' job insecurity (which can be divided into two dimensions: parents' job quantity insecurity and job quality insecurity) is transmitted within the family, i.e., the relationship between parents' job insecurity and high school students' career decision making, based on the context of the Covid-19 epidemic. The relationship between ambiguity aversion and its mechanism of action. This study used the Job Insecurity scale, the Perceived parental career-related behaviors scale, and the Career Decision Ambiguity Tolerance scale to survey a sample of 790 grade 10 and grade 11 students in Shandong Province. This study used SPSS 27.0 software for data preprocessing, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and independent samples t-test; regression analysis was used to test the predictive effects of parental job insecurity and parental career parenting behavior on high school students' ambiguous aversion to career decision making. Structural equation modeling of the data using Mplus 7.0 was used to test the mediating effect of parenting behaviors. The results of the study were as follows: First, there are significant differences in gender between parental job insecurity, parental career interference, barriers to engagement, and high school students' career decision ambiguity aversion, all of which are significantly higher scores for boys than girls. There were significant differences in the total score of parents' job insecurity, parents' quantitative job insecurity, and parental career support, among which the parents' job insecurity both total score and quantitative score in the upper second grade were greater than those in the first grade, and the parents' career support behaviors in the first grade was greater than that in the second grade. There was a significant difference between the total score of parents' job insecurity and the barriers to engagement behaviors in the family income level, the total score of parents' job insecurity with a monthly household income of less than 5,000 yuan was significantly higher than that of families with a monthly household income of 1-20,000 yuan, and the score of parental career barriers to engagement with a monthly family income of less than 5,000 yuan was significantly higher than that of families with a monthly household income of 1-20,000 yuan and more than 20,000 yuan. Second, the total score of parents' job insecurity and quantitative insecurity can significantly positively predict high school students' career decision ambiguity and disgust. Third, parental career interference and barriers to engagement in career can significantly positively predict high school students' career decision-making ambiguity aversion; Parental career support behaviors can significantly negatively predict high school students' career ambiguity aversion. Fourth, the behavior of lacking engagement plays a partial mediating role in parents' job insecurity and high school students' career decision-making ambiguity aversion, and parental career support behavior and parental career interference behavior do not play a mediating role. |
