In the wake of information globalization and the digitization of media, subtitles in traditional video mediums have transcended their original role as mere supplementary auditory cues. This evolution has given rise to a trend of 'Commoditization of Subtitling', marking the transition of subtitles from a peripheral element to an intrinsic component of audio-visual content. The panoramic viewing mode and three-dimensional spatial experience offered by VR technology render some traditional audio-visual language rules of subtitles inapplicable within VR. Inappropriate subtitle design can disrupt the immersive experience and comprehension within the virtual environment. Therefore, to enhance the overall viewing experience of participants, the design of subtitles has evolved from being an afterthought to an indispensable aspect of the VR content creation process, closely integrated with the image content. Current academic research has explored subtitle positioning based on world-referenced subtitles and comic bubble subtitles among other categories. However, there remains a significant lack of standardized design and application research for VR subtitles both domestically and internationally, underlining a critical need for related studies to fill this gap. Building on this premise, this study focuses on subtitle expression in VR scenes enhanced by 6DoF (Six Degrees of Freedom) technology. It conducts a systematic and in-depth analysis of the optimization design characteristics of VR image subtitles from five aspects: assisting in plot comprehension, atmosphere enhancement, visual guidance, interaction amplification, and spatial molding. Summarizes four major design methods: readability based on the VR field of view, figure-ground relationship based on three-dimensional space, dynamic adaptation based on visual habits, and supplementary reminders based on natural interaction. These principles offer crucial reference points for subtitle design in the creation of VR image content.

This study initiates with an exploration of the historical development of subtitle design, clarifying the representation of subtitles in traditional film and video games. Chapter 3 starts from the specific attributes of VR media, tracing the evolution of VR imagery and analyzing the novel requirements VR media imposes on subtitle design. Chapter 4 selects ten representative VR image works from both domestic and international sources. It categorizes the subtitles within these works according to their core functions such as aiding plot comprehension, enhancing atmosphere, guiding vision, and enhancing interaction, as well as their auxiliary function in spatial molding. Building on this foundation, the study examines the design characteristics of subtitles for each function, laying a groundwork for the subsequent induction and summary of design methodologies. Chapter 5, drawing from typical case analyses and the basic principles of interaction design, summarises design methods suitable for VR image subtitles, including readability based on the VR field of view, the figure-ground relationship based on three-dimensional space, dynamic adaptation based on visual habits, and supplementary reminders based on natural interaction.
As VR technology matures and creative concepts continue to evolve, subtitles are anticipated to play an increasingly diversified role in future VR experiences, presenting a growing trend of significance in VR applications. While ensuring the clarity and readability of textual information, the design of subtitles needs to prioritize user experience needs. Through meticulous design and practice, it is essential to ensure that subtitles integrate seamlessly and unobtrusively with content and context, thereby enhancing the user immersive experience.
