新中国倡导发展“国民体育”，足球运动在这一理念下继续发展，1949-1959年这十多年间，《人民日报》对足球运动的报道量在1956、1957年达到高峰，而后迅速下降；报道内容上，《人民日报》着重报道了新中国的足球队与兄弟国家间的学习交流和友谊赛等活动，体现出《人民日报》的新闻报道及这一时期足球比赛的政治性特征；从文本内容来看，《人民日报》的报道体裁以通讯和评论为主，保持正面立场，行文严肃，注重报道比赛过程本身和营造友好的比赛交流氛围。新时代需要新体育，改善目前的足球舆论生态，需要着重发挥《人民日报》等官方媒体的舆论引导作用，让足球运动的报道和评论回到比赛本身，淡化过激与不当的两极化舆论。
