第一章“建置悬念的开放空间”通过选取刁亦男电影中的夜市、野冰场和车站广场三处典型的黑夜开放空间，并分析了这些空间中环境信息的呈现方式，以及人物行动空间和单位空间的关系，探究了刁亦男是如何通过这些“黑夜”中的开放空间完成悬念建置的；

第二章“塑造人物的封闭空间”通过选取刁亦男电影中的歌舞厅、出租屋、乡村旅店三处典型的黑夜封闭空间，并分析这些封闭空间的构建方式，探究了刁亦男电影如何通过“黑夜”中的封闭空间构建人物关系的；

第三章“外化人物心理世界的流动空间”通过选取刁亦男电影中开放水域上的游船、夜车、摩天轮三处典型的黑夜流动空间，并分析这些流动空间的视觉形象及构成方式，探究了刁亦男是如何通过“黑夜”中流动空间的表意功能将人物的心理世界外化的。

综上所述，在“黑夜”开放空间中，刁亦男通过全景、硬焦点等方式尽可能多的提供环境信息，完成对开放空间的记忆重构，通过观众天然的空间经验制造紧张情绪，并通过单位空间的选择性呈现以及单位空间的组合序列抛出情节中会引起观众好奇的疑问完成悬念的设置；对于“黑夜”中的封闭空间，刁亦男热衷于挑选观众具有深刻的空间记忆的封闭空间，通过单位空间的构图设计，强化观众对这些封闭空间的刻板印象，塑造片中的人物形象和人物关系；而刁亦男电影中的流动空间往往因为被置于黑夜之中或者被赋予黑夜色彩而具有了某种隐喻或象征的能力，其黑夜将流动空间之外的信息隐去，使之成为孤立在黑夜中的意象符号，放大了空间与黑夜本身的在叙事上的表意功能。
