本文试图通过探寻美国现代诗人罗伯特•弗罗斯特的“隐秘性”诗学与中国古典诗论中的含蓄美学在诗学思想上的互通,揭示两者在诗歌中追求由简单抵达深邃背后的共同逻辑。二十世纪初的西方现代主义诗歌以其在诗歌形式上的实验性和先锋性而有别于浪漫主义传统的诗歌。在反传统、重形式创新、重诗歌难度的现代主义诗潮中,弗罗斯特却仍选择保留传统的诗歌韵律,语言简单、平实而朗朗上口。然而,弗罗斯特的诗歌在保留了传统诗歌相对简单的诗歌形式的同时,其复杂性和难度却不亚于同时代的现代主义诗歌。本文认为,弗罗斯特选择保留简单传统的诗歌形式,却同时能由简单抵达复杂背后有着自己独特的诗学思想。无独有偶,中国古典诗论中的含蓄美学讲究在简单质朴中实现意义的深邃,并且将这种简单质朴看做至高的境界。通过梳理以及比较弗罗斯特这一选择背后的“隐秘性”诗学以及中国古典诗论“含蓄”,本文发现弗罗斯特的“隐秘性”诗学与中国古典诗论“含蓄”选择保留简单质朴的诗歌语言且能够由简单抵达深邃的可能性在于:在表达策略层面上,两者承认语言的局限性,并以提喻的方式使用语言,因而以有限指涉无限,以简单寓复杂具有可行性;在诗歌哲学层面上,两者突破了二元对立思维的束缚,认识到终极意义的虚幻性,从而将人通过语言和理性获取终极意义的焦灼中解救出来,关照到在思考和直觉领悟中的人本身的价值。

By exploring the affinities between the American modern poet Robert Frost’s poetics of ulteriority and Chinese classical poetics of han-xü, this thesis intends to reveal the logic behind their choice of using simplicity to reach complexity in poetry. The modern poets in the early twenty-century West have great passion in experimenting with the form of poetry. Against such a literary background, the older and simpler way of expression in the Romantic era is usually considered unsophisticated as well as insufficient to express the complexity of the modern mentality. However, Frost still sticks to this simple and traditional way of poetic expression that many would consider unsophisticated. Moreover, he is able to gain the modern complexity through his simple way of expression. This thesis believes that Frost has an implicit logic behind his choice of reaching complexity through simplicity. Frost’s way of reaching complexity through simplicity is strongly echoed by one of the most important Chinese poetic legacies—han-xü which sees simplicity in form as of paramount value. By exploring the affinities between Frost’s implicit poetics of ulteriority and Chinese classic poetics of han-xü, this thesis finds that the possible reasons for which Frost and many ancient Chinese poets would choose and are able to use simplicity in form to reach complexity are the followings: from the technical level, they both readily admit the limitation of the poetic language and treat the poetic language synecdochally. Hence, it is possible that the finite and the simple can be used to suggest the infinite and the profound; from the philosophical level, not being confined by the binary opposition and the illusion of the absolute Truth, they emancipate man from the desperate quest of an ultimate meaning through language and bring their attention to the value of humanity itself in the process of thinking and intuitive understanding.
