This thesis aims to explore the code of good guys in Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer-winning novel The Road from the perspective of Emmanuel Levinas’s ethical theory. The code of good guys penetrates the whole novel and plays a directive role in restoring ethics in the post-apocalyptic world. Levinas’s ethics interprets the establishment of ethical relationship with the Other, coinciding the implication of the code of good guys.
According to Emmanuel Levinas, ethical relationship is initiated by the alterity of the Other which precedes one’s own being. Assuming one’s responsibility for the Other is the precondition to singularize one’s subjectivity. In the real-world interpersonal relationship, the alterity of the Other commands a person to assume his responsibility for others---other people, to establish ethical relationships. In The Road, the code of good guys can be divided into the code of responsibility for others and the code of survival. However, responsibility for others and one’s own survival are contradictory with each other. Following the code of responsibility for others in the post-apocalyptic world can endanger one’s own survival while living only for one’s survival can cause bankruptcy of ethics. Thus, Levinasian ethics is challenged. Confronting the dilemma of whether to choose ethics or survival, survivors make different choices. The cannibals live only for their survival at the cost of other people’s lives. The father regards survival as priority but does not harm others initiatively. The son chooses to answer the call of all even if his own life is at stake. Among all the three choices, the son’s choice of following the code of good guys to restore ethics bears the only hope to prevent human beings from extinction. The Levinasian ethical Self/Other relationship that the Other is prior of one’s own being still has determinative power. The Other is an embodiment of goodness to be realized, so responding to the Other is also imperative to realize the Good, which echoes McCarthy’s appeal for goodness in the novel.
