The rapid outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 became a focal point of global attention. China played a key role in pandemic prevention and control policies. The reporting angles and attitudes of Malaysian news media towards China's epidemic control also became a hot research topic. The english news portal “The Star Online” and the chinese news portal “Sin Chew Daily” online media coverage of China's epidemic prevention and control measures triggered widespread attention from journalists and other members of the public.

Using framing theory, this paper compares the two media outlets, “The Star Online” and “Sin Chew Daily”, using content analysis and text analysis to compare their reports on China's epidemic situation from January 2020 to October 2022. In addition, taking into account the cultural backgrounds of the two outlets, the paper also explores the factors influencing their coverage and the ways in which public opinion is influenced. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the feedback of audience on their Facebook pages in response to articles related to China's epidemic prevention and control.

The study found significant differences between “The Star Online” and “Sin Chew Daily” in their coverage of China's pandemic situation. The two outlets differed in their reporting volume, placement of articles, and distribution of issues. Differences in information channels also led to differences in public perception of China. “The Star Online” mainly explored international relations and policies, while “Sin Chew Daily” focused more on the development of the epidemic in China and daily life. Although both media outlets presented a positive outlook, negative evaluations on specific issues, such as virus origins and vaccine issues, also emerged to some extent, which were influenced by Western media. The underlying factors for negative evaluations included Malaysian ethnic culture, political stance, audience psychology, and economic interests. Through analysis of audience feedback, the study found that the attitudes and emotions of readers towards China's epidemic situation were generally positive, reflecting the affirmation and support of the audience for China's epidemic prevention and control measures. These research results have important implications for China's external communication and media coverage, and provide some suggestions for improving the perception of China among the Malaysian people.
