Charlemagne's campaigns are a significant part of the early medieval history of Western Europe, among which the Saxon War is one of the most important chapters. In this 33-year war, three legal texts focused on the Saxon region, which are the Capitulatio de partibus Saxoniae, Capitulare Saxonicum, and Lex Saxonum. These three decrees were collectively referred to as the Leges Saxonum in the studies of the later generations of academics. The first two Saxon decrees are special legal documents of the Frankish period, with the nature of the king's executive orders, while the Lex Saxonum is the product of the large-scale codification work led by Charlemagne after his accession as the emperor. Thus, the Saxon Code not only reflects the evolution of the overall situation of the Saxon War, but also effectively reflects Charlemagne's will, and is the centralized expression of the conquest policy he planned for the Saxons. The Saxon War can be roughly divided into two main phases: 772-785 and 792-804. In the first phase, Charlemagne's policy of conquest against the Saxons focused on forcing the Saxons to fully Christianize and establish a Frankish order and institutions in Saxony. In the second phase, Charlemagne's policy was to break down the last pockets of Saxon resistance through mass forced conversions of the Saxons and the intensification of internal divisions in Saxon society. The Capitulatio de partibus Saxoniae, which arose in the first phase of the war, focused on both religious and administrative aspects and demonstrated Charlemagne's concern and demand for two specific matters: the Christianization of Saxony and the countship. The Capitulare Saxonicum and the Lex Saxonum were both produced in the second phase of the war. The former was mainly concerned with judicial matters, amending, supplementing and supplementing the other decrees. The latter, on the other hand, dealt with a wider range of issues, including both criminal and civil law provisions, and was an overall regulation of all aspects of Saxon society. The Leges Saxonum played an important role in Charlemagne's Saxon policy, mainly in the areas of political conquest and Christianization. In terms of political conquest, the Leges attempted to establish the authority of the Frankish king in the Saxon region, where there was no tradition of kingship, tried to combine the count system with the traditional judicial customs of the Saxons, and intensified the hierarchical division of Saxon society by strengthening the legal status of the Saxon nobility, so as to break down the resistance of the Saxon people and consolidate the achievements of the Frankish conquests in a comprehensive way. In terms of Christianization, the Leges combated the pagan customs and traditions of the Saxons, defended the Christian faith by strong means, and strengthened the construction of the church, giving more protection and power to the church and the clergy, to promote the Christianization of the Saxons. Overall, the Leges Saxonu, reflect the political, legal, and religious issues of the time, and as a whole, they are closely related to the evolution of the Saxon wars and played an important role in Charlemagne's conquest policy towards the Saxons. |
