Romanian cinema, since the dawn of the 21st century, has transitioned from a marginal to a prominent presence, often securing accolades at global film festivals, and is recognized as the Romanian New Wave. The rise of the New Wave is deeply intertwined with global film festivals, casting doubt and controversy over the New Wave's very concept. International film festivals have intensified the impact of post-colonialism on movie production, leading Romanian cinema into a quandary of monotony and uniformity, catering excessively to Western perceptions and masking societal truths. Presently, the Romanian New Wave is evolving and has distinctly shifted. Creators started distancing themselves from the post-colonial milieu, delving into profound contemplation of Europe's present circumstances, the spiritual realm, and worldwide challenges, consistently earning accolades and revitalizing Romanian film.
This study delves into the evolution of the Romanian New Wave, integrating it with the post-Cold War period context and using actor networks and postcolonialism theories as a basis, to investigate how international film festivals significantly influenced the birth and formation of the Romanian New Wave. Reflecting on the impactful methods of film production, global communication, and cultural dissemination stemming from Romanian film development.
