Tiezhou Deji (? - 1366) was a famous monk and poet in the period of Wushan in Japan, but studies on him and his poetry are still lacking in China. During the Yuan Dynasty, Tiezhou came to China to study Zen and wrote many Chinese poems, which were compiled in The Collection of Yanfu. Since Chinese literature and Chinese regional characteristics had made a felt impact on his poems, The Collection of Yanfu serves as an example to investigate the Chinese influence exerted upon the Japanese Chinese poems in the Wushan Period, thus enriching studies of the literature of that time. This thesis takes the Chinese poems of Tiezhou into scrutiny, focusing on his relationship to Chinese and Japanese poets and monks, analyzing the characteristics of Tiezhou’s Zen poems. Furthermore, this writing concentrates on the “Chinese influence” in these poems, which includes the image of Chinese poets and Chinese myths and legends. Next, the poems celebrating gardens in The Collection of Yanfu display a documentary characteristic of the poem in the Wushan Period. Finally, the writing examines the relationship between the poems and paintings of Tiezhou to reveal the influence of Chinese painting on his poems. The introduction part involves the background and significance of this topic and latest researches in this field, and then presents its research methods. The main body consists of three chapters: Chapter one introduces Tiezhou Deji and his Collection of Yanfu from the aspects of his Zen religion and monks related to him, the former aiming to clarify the Zen characteristics in his poem creation, the latter aiming to demonstrate Tiezhou’s influence on the Zen poetry. Then the writing introduces The Collection of Yanfu in the fashion of the classification of the poet, on the basis of which to discuss the origin, features and expression of “the fusion of poetry and Zen” in Tiezhou. Chapter two expounds on the influence of Chinese literature on Tiezhou’s poetry from the standard in his rewriting the image of Tao Yuanming and Huang Tingjian, and then analyses the constellation of the images of the Moon Palace, which corresponds to Chinese moon myths. Chapter three looks in general into the documentary elements and the interdisciplinary nature of Tiezhou’s poetry. This part first sorts out the regional writing of China in The Collection of Yanfu; then investigates the documentary elements in the poems celebrating gardens; finally relates his poems to his paintings to explain the influence of Chinese painting on his poems.
