改革开放以来，随着我国经济的飞速发展和经济建设的累累硕果，人民物质文化需求和精神文化需要之间的矛盾日益凸显。目前，我国正处于由传统社会向现代社会转型的重要时期，社会关系、社会结构出现重大变革，建设社会主义民主政治、培养出一大批符合新时代建设者要求的高素质高能力人才，成为实现“中国梦”最强有力的后盾。纵观历史，我们发现19世纪末的美国，由于近代化的迅速完成，社会结构遭遇重大调整，一时间拜金主义、极端个人主义泛滥，社会奢靡之风盛行，然而贫富差距巨大所引起的贫困问题，则使得贫民的生活苦不堪言。在美国社会大震荡的时期，爆发了轰轰烈烈的进步主义运动，而杜威的民主主义教育思想则成为进步主义教育的总纲领。我们至今仍可以看到美国科技、教育方面的成就，这也是两百年后的今天杜威民主教育思想仍为众多学者所关注的原因之一。虽然我国现状与当时美国社会情况有着许多的不同，但是我们仍然可以从其相同之处寻求解决我国德育教育困境的启发与方法。正如杜威所说，要实现社会的理想，教育才是首要、有效的工具。发展民主主义教育，对于国家的长远发展起着至关重要的作用。本文将以杜威民主主义教育思想为依托，根据19世纪末美国社会动荡的成因，及我国社会发展现状来分析我国德育教育的现状和困境，并提出整体性的改造思路及建议。
