Star-chasing is a common phenomenon among teenagers. Previous studies and various voices in the society, including the media, all regard star-chasing of teenagers as a problem behavior. However the teenagers’ feelings of star-chasing are ignored. What do teenagers want to express through star-chasing behavior, and how do they show the meanings through these behaviors? What is the relationship between star-chasing and adolescents' self-identity construction? How do they get along with themselves, others and society in the process of star worshiping? These are the questions of this paper. Understanding the relationship between star-worship and adolescents' individual identity and growth can provide a possible reference for school education when dealing with problems about star-worship. This study adopts qualitative research method and conducts in-depth research on their star-chasing process and subjective feelings through in-depth interviews with 10 students, 4 parents of them, a teacher and the director of two schools in B City. On this basis, it reveals the characteristics of Chinese youth star chasing subculture. The research finds that the current star-chasing of teenagers in China is different from the western, especially the resistance of the Birmingham school to the mainstream culture. The resistance of star chasing of teenagers in our country is very mild, it does not vex or deny the mainstream culture. Chinese teenagers’ star chasing has double significance, namely double resistance. First, they form their own unique circle culture and self-expression in the face of heavy schoolwork, one-way performance-based education evaluation system and upward pressure through star chasing. They regard their favorite stars as "significant others", and the stars show them another possible life. In addition, the free space provided by network media provides teenagers with various and free choices and outlets for self-expression. Second, star-chasing is also, to some extent, a kind of resistance to their parents' high educational expectations and the autocratic educational authority. In the process of star-worship, the culture they form is markedly different from that of their parents, with more varied and secretive styles of resistance. Third, the openness and privacy of cyberspace and the participation of consumer culture make it more convenient for teenagers to pursue stars in various ways, with rich resources, high mobility and convenience. Based on the above findings, this study believes that understanding the structured situation behind adolescents' star-chasing behavior and the internal logic of adolescents' confrontation and communication through star-chasing is the key point to correctly dealing with the phenomenon of adolescents' star-chasing. This study believes that, on the one hand, the country and society should see the significance of the double resistance behind teenagers' star-chasing, and understand their needs for self-expression and self-identity through star-chasing from the perspective of teenagers. On the other hand, it is necessary to pay attention to the family atmosphere and study pressure of teenagers. At the same time, laws and regulations should be used to carry out necessary supervision on the information spread by the industry and media, so as to provide a good external environment for the growth of teenagers. |
