In today’s society, people are very concerned about morality. News and events about morality are full of our daily life. People often make moral judgment and evaluation on the behavior of others through the network, media and self-media. In the process of moral judgment in which the general public participates, the behavior of high-class or low-class actors is the most concerned. Then, will people be influenced by the social class characteristics of the actors themselves, leading to more lenient or stricter moral judgment? In order to discover and confirm the existence of social class effect in moral judgment, this research will discuss the influence of social class characteristics on the judges’ moral judgment from two aspects of moral behavior and immoral behavior through two studies respectively. The first part of research is mainly from the aspect of moral behavior, exploring how the social class characteristics of the actor affect the judge’s moral judgment of his behavior, as well as its internal mechanism and boundary conditions. The first study includes study 1, study 2 and study 3. Study 1 finds that there is social class effect in moral behavior judgment. Whether through the overall moral behavior judgment materials or specific caring behavior and fair behavior situational imagination, the social class characteristics of the actors will affect the severity of moral judgment on the moral behavior of the participants. For the same behavior, compared with the low-class actors, the participants had looser moral judgment on the moral behavior of the high-class actors. Study 2 explains the social class effect of moral judgment from the social acceptance path. Based on study 1, it is found that the social class characteristics of the actors influence the moral judgment of the judges on their moral behavior through the intermediary of social acceptance. Compared with the low-class actors, the participants have higher social acceptance for the high-class actors. Higher social acceptance leads to higher appreciation and looser moral judgment for the high-class actors. Study 3 explores the boundary conditions for judging the social class effect of moral behavior from the perspective of the judge’s role, and finds that the judge’s role is the boundary condition for the influence of the social class characteristics of the actor on the judge’s moral judgment of moral behavior. When the participants are observers, the social class characteristics of the actors will affect their moral judgment, making them more lenient to the moral behavior of the high-class actors than the low-class actors; However, when the participants are beneficiaries, moral behavior judges that the social class effect disappears. The second part is mainly to explore how the social class characteristics of the actor affect the judge’s moral judgment of his immoral behavior, and its internal mechanism and boundary conditions from the aspect of immoral behavior. The second study also includes three studies, namely study 4, study 5 and study 6. Study 4 finds that the social class effect of immoral behavior judgment, the imoral behavior of the high-class actors were more immoral and harsher than that of the low-class actors. Study5 explains the social class effect of immoral behavior judgment from the anger path. On the basis of study 4, it excludes the intermediary path of social expectation and sympathy, and finds that the social class characteristics of the actor influence others’ moral judgment of their immoral behavior through the intermediary mechanism of anger. Compared with the low-class actors, the participants have higher anger towards the immoral behaviors of the high-class actors. The higher anger leads the participants to think that the immoral behaviors of the high-class actors are more immoral, and the moral judgment to the high-class actors is more severe. Study 6 explores the boundary conditions for immoral behavior to judge the social class effect from the perspective of the role of judges and the immoral degree of immoral behavior. It is found that the judge’s role and immoral degree are the boundary conditions that the social class characteristics of the actor influence the judge’s moral judgment on his immoral behavior. When the judge’s role is observer or the immoral degree of behavior is general, there is a class effect of moral judgment. The judge is more severe in moral judgment of immoral behavior of the high-class actors than the low-class actors. However, when the judge’s role is the victim or when the immoral behavior is serious, the social class effect of immoral behavior judgment disappears. To sum up, the social class characteristics of the actor will affect the judge’s moral judgment of his behavior. In terms of moral behavior, the judges are more lenient in their moral judgment towards the high-class actors than those of the low-class actors. As for the immoral behavior, judges are more severe in their moral judgment of the high-class actors than those of the low-class actors.
