In “The Waste Land”, Eliot constructs the image of wasteland based on the decadence of the western civilization in the 20th century with the fragmented images and mythological allusions, showing the spiritual disillusionment of a western generation. This thesis classifies the images of nature in the poem according to their links with the themes of death, sexuality and salvation. The thesis aims to explore the ways in which Eliot selects and arranges images of nature and how the images are closely embedded in one of the central ideas of the poem, that is, the destruction and rescue of western civilization.
        The main body of the thesis is divided into the following three chapters: in the first chapter the thesis gets the idea of the cycle of life and resurrection from the images of water and the withering land; the second chapter discusses the relationship between the depravity of sex and the images of nightingale, fire and the Thames in western society; the third chapter analyzes the religious salvation of the wasteland from the images of rock and thunder.
