Douyin has become the most popular visual social app among young people, but it has been criticized for its algorithmic suppression. Chinese queer women use the umbrella term "lala" to place their identities, and because they cannot apply a full hashtag vocabulary to identify and connect with their communities in Douyin, they use hashtags such as "#le" that have been harmonized and transcribed as group identity to break out from the suppression of invisibility. In the visual medium, the performance of their bodies becomes the most important field of identity speech.
This study proposes research questions from the perspectives of Social Identity Theory, Objectification Theory, and Media Affordance Theory, constructs a research framework through participatory observation, discusses three dimensions of video format, queer women's physical appearance, and queer women's impression construction, and uses content analysis and in-depth interviewing to analyze the strategies of cool women's body visibility practices in Douyin in detail.
From the video format dimension, the videos of Douyin queer women's body exhibition center around visual presentation, precisely grasp the rhythm of short video application, choose intimate and social distance with a strong sense of communication, and human voice tends to be excluded from the body dimension display. The amount of fans of the creator shows a positive correlation to the visibility of the video, but there is still an implicit recommendation threshold of more than 10,000 fans to have the chance to get more than 300,000 tier likes.
In terms of the physical appearance of cooler women, Douyin queer women exhibit young, lean bodies with a fluid appearance temperament. There is no shortage of videos showing muscle power, but "muscle correct" does not shake "fat correct", and makeup grooming is still relevant to femininity. The objectified presentation of queer women needs to be reinterpreted: the invisibility of the face and the sexualized limbs are unwelcome; nudity and clothing fit are stripped from the old dimensions of objectification, and both often appear alongside transgressive femininity such as large body size, heavy makeup, body modification, and muscularity. At the same time, the more masculine the appearance is, the better the clothes fit and the more exposed the body is. The objectification of queer women's exhibition is a show of power and an attack on traditional gender temperament norms.
From the dimension of impression presentation, Douyin queer women show high ability rather than low ability, and more low warmth rather than high warmth. The impression presentation strategies of Douyin queer women can be divided into two kinds: one is competence-coolness and the other is incompetence-warmth. In the public space of Douyin, queer women either tract their selves with a rejectionist attitude or blend the boundaries with a relatable image, strategically presenting identity imagery. This choice of impression strategy comes from three reasons for identifying each other, drawing boundaries with heterosexuality, and male intrusive behavior. On Douyin, a youth-oriented social media platform, queer women are driven by multiple influences from the platform's commerce, gender exhibition, and youth subculture to use their own bodies as a landscape to establish access to postmodern interpretations.
This study identifies the discourse of Chinese queer women's expressions on the grid from real individual practices, explores the expressions of queer women in the short video platform Douyin, a representative of video-based social media, and responds to the question of the placement of the queer women's bodies in a new period and in a neglected geographical space, complementing this study of the queer women's community through the analysis of their body image performances. New insights and footnotes are provided for the study of queer women's online appearance and their visual use of social media.
