American naturalism has influenced many important aspects of American Society, and it can be seen in the literary field. Theodore Dreiser’s book Sister Carrie is a magnum opus of American naturalistic literature. Scholars from all over the world have studied and analyzed this book from various aspects. Some are based on American naturalism, some focus on the “American dream” and others pay attention to feminism. This paper analyzes the connection between protagonist Carrie’s character and her new woman features and American naturalism. The analysis shows that Carrie is different from those traditional women. She has her own dream and tries her best to achieve it; she is independent at last; although she needs love, she wants her relationship to be a fair one, she longs for the social status as well as fame and money. It concludes that the development of naturalism is the main reason for the formation of the new woman features, and Carrie’s change into a new woman is partly a result of the environment that she is in.
