权杖在人们的普遍观点中被认为只存在于西方文明中，然而多处考古发掘证明，中国境内出土有若干权杖。我国境内史前权杖的出土地点遍及全国，它在中国经历了起源、演变、衰落的全过程，因而中国的权杖不是从西方传播而来，而应是本土产物；权杖的出现对于史前先民具有普遍性和必然性，从“生产工具”到“武器装备”或“巫术用具”，再到部落首领的“权力杖”，最终成为一种昭示身份、象征权威的特殊器具。它是社会发展到一定阶段的必然产物，产生之初不受外来文化影响，而后因为各地文明的自身演变及不同文化的交汇，局部出现交流融合。对权杖问题的讨论，可以为我们重新审视地域文明的发展和中西文明的传播提供新的依据。
