This research was designed to aid policymakers and administrators in creating a more supportive and inclusive Living-Learning Environment (LLE) between domestic and international students in on-campus housing at their Beijing campus. This research set out with the presupposition that the current housing assignment policy, which separates domestic and international student bodies, has negative implications on the current LLE which can be improved on. In order to aid policymakers towards this end, the researcher examined current housing assignment policy and interviewed twelve international and domestic graduate students on their experiences and perceptions towards this separation. It was found that both international and domestic students firmly believe there should be an option for, or a way to “opt in” to mixed housing. In addition, both domestic and international students strongly advocated for there to be more interaction between their student groups and cited several reasons for low levels of interaction and offered suggestions for improvement. Reasons included a lack of opportunities/instances for mutual interaction and inadequate environmental attributes on campus, especially within student dormitories. Suggestions included the creation/implementation of more well-marketed programs or activities and creating more spaces on campus, such as within residence halls, which can foster mutual engagement (e.g., common areas).
