Although “The Cask of Amontillado” is one of the most mysterious fictions in Poe’s works, it is always simply considered as a murder story. Despite it holds a different characteristic on composing with his other crime stories, this fiction's complicated implications are neglected. In a sense, its study has an ample space to explore. This paper probes into the underlying theme of “The Cask of Amontillado” through the analysis on the disparity between two characters Montresor and Fortunato and the biblical allusions of Montresor. The different social status and power relations of Montresor and Fortunato present the inescapable threat of death frequently existing in Poe’s fictions and the biblical allusions of Montresor further emphasise the power of the evil. Both of them lead to the underlying theme that under the potentially destructive force behind human life, a human is vulnerable and impotent, which to a large extent reflects Poe's pessimism towards life. In a word, the result of this analysis gives a further insight into “The Cask of Amontillado” and Poe’s other fictions.
