This essay explores women's place and role-playing in marriage.Against the background of the 1860s, especially the traditional marriage pattern, Margaret Mitchell presents a different marriage pattern. The author reads a lot of books on marital theories,American history and Margaret Mitchell's personal experience. It is supposed to solve two problems: how she presents and why she does that. Accordingly it is split into two parts. The first part focuses on proving that Margaret Mitchell's marriage pattern,as shown in Gone with the Wind, is indeed unconventional. Marital theories are referred to here,as well as some related criticism. Three women, Scarlett, Melanie and Ellen are respectively analyzed in their marriages. As for Scarlett, analysis is given of her dominance in mutual affection, her economic independence and the power of making decision, and also the reversion of role-playing in her three marriages. As for Melanie and Ellen, their spiritual dominance, extended social activity and role-playing as unsubmissive wives are cited as evidence of Margaret Mitchell's unconventional marriage pattern. The second part of the essay explains why Margaret Mitchell presents this unconventional view of marriage. It is explained by both the period she lived in and her personal experience. The author does some research into the historical background, especially the feminist movement then. The 1920-30s was a transitional period in American history featuring an anti-norm spirit, indulgence, sexual revolution and the progressing feminist movement.Margaret Mitchell's marriages and the education she received also influenced her. |
