With the continuous development of modern society and the improvement of people's living standards, there is increasing emphasis on a healthy lifestyle. The natural environment can improve mood, mental health, and reduce the risk of diseases. Contact with nature can enhance nature connectedness, which is beneficial for both physical and mental health. While healthy eating behaviors are a fundamental form of healthy living, previous research has rarely focused on how nature connectedness can promote healthy eating behaviors. This study aims to increase healthy eating behaviors from the perspective of nature connectedness, promoting the development of physical and mental health. Through two studies, this paper explores the role of nature connectedness in promoting healthy eating behaviors and examines the internal mechanisms by focusing on the mediating role of self-control.

Study 1 used a questionnaire survey method to examine the relationships among nature connectedness, self-control, and healthy eating behaviors, as well as the mediating role of self-control. The questionnaire was distributed through the Credamo data marketplace, and 200 valid samples were collected. The results indicated that there were positive correlations between nature connectedness, self-control, and healthy eating behaviors. Additionally, nature connectedness was negatively correlated with unhealthy eating behaviors, and self-control was negatively correlated with unhealthy eating behaviors. Self-control also mediated the relationships between nature connectedness and both healthy and unhealthy eating behaviors.

Study 2 employed a laboratory experiment method to manipulate the level of nature connectedness, exploring its impact on healthy eating behavior and the mediating role of self-control. A single-factor, two-level (nature connectedness activation group/urban environment control group) between-subjects design was used. A total of 192 participants were recruited from the data marketplace on the Credamo platform, with 100 in the nature connectedness activation group and 92 in the urban environment control group. Nature connectedness was manipulated using a video method, and self-control was measured, along with healthy eating behavior through a simulated virtual menu ordering task. The results showed that nature connectedness significantly and positively predicted healthy eating behavior, with self-control playing a mediating role. In other words, nature connectedness increased healthy eating behavior by enhancing self-control.

Through two studies, this research found that a connection with nature has a positive impact on healthy eating behaviors. Self-control acts as a mediator between connection with nature and healthy eating behaviors, meaning that connection with nature enhances self-control, which in turn increases healthy eating behaviors. This result provides empirical evidence to understand the relationship between connection with nature and healthy eating behaviors and the underlying mechanisms. It also offers practical guidance for interventions aimed at increasing healthy eating behaviors from the perspective of connection with nature.
