本文试图探讨的是铁路（主要是地下铁路）作为一种新式交通工具在近代伦敦兴起、发展的过程、所产生的影响以及决定地铁发展路径的种种因素。在具体行文中，笔者主要以十九世纪中叶到二十世纪初期伦敦地下铁路的建设、运营过程为例，通过对地铁宏观发展过程和具体相关设施建设、技术使用的描述，分析这种交通工具的建设和应用对城市社会生活和环境产生的影响，在此基础上进一步探讨了决定和制约交通技术运用的社会因素。同时试图指出今天的人们在制订技术发展政策和实施技术更新时，理应回顾和借鉴历史的经验教训，以一种更加理智、成熟的心态做出选择 |
