Virginia Woolf in Mrs. Dalloway utilizes juxtaposition of Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith to achieve structural and thematic unity. The present paper is a tentative attempt to examine Woolf’s paradigmatic presentation of character juxtaposition in Mrs. Dalloway. The analytical framework of this thesis is to first introduce the basic background information and social experience of Clarissa and Septimus, then elaborate on how the character juxtaposition is constructed. It discusses Woolf’s ingenious utilization of structural opposites and its significance in adding up the structural unity. Apart from this, it proposes that connections such as co-occurrence of images, literary allusion from Cymbeline and time as well as space montage play a vital role in constructing the juxtaposition. It concludes that juxtaposition of Clarissa and Septimus is conducive to enriching images of characters, strengthening structure cohesion and constructing dynamic reader-writer interaction. More importantly, studying Woolf’s revolutionary technique of character juxtaposition also helps to penetrate into the connotations revealed by Clarissa and Septimus in Mrs. Dalloway to further expose Woolf’s concern over the significance of individual’s death to life, namely, death is another being of life, functioning as a means to embrace life and her unique interpretation on sanity and insanity as two dimensions of one entity.
