近年来,随着全球化的进程加快和中国国际影响力的不断提高,我国的传统文化和文学艺术逐步走向世界,尤其在西方英语国家中广受欢迎。然而由于中西方政治、历史、宗教、习俗等方面的不同,跨文化交际面临着重大的挑战。我国是一个有悠久历史的和灿烂文明的国家,其文化与语言紧密联系在一起,形成了成语、俗语等一系列表达方式和诗词歌赋等多种文体。文化负载词,又称语义空缺或文化内涵词,是民族文化在词汇层面上的直接或间接反映。文化负载词的研究对中国古代典籍的翻译十分重要,也对中国文学走向世界具有深远的意义。
《幽梦影》蕴含着道家美学和佛家禅意的底蕴、独抒性灵的美学追求以及中国古代世人的人格和道德追求等丰富的文学和哲学内涵。而“两脚踏中西文化,一心评宇宙文章”的林语堂也是跨文化翻译中颇有建树的大师,因此研究林语堂的文化负载词翻译很有意义。本文将基于林语堂先生的译作《幽梦影》,探讨林语堂先生在本书中文化负载词的翻译策略。通过讨论林语堂先生使用直译、音译和改译的范例和分析,探索林语堂如何在符合英语语言习惯和保持原文的文化成分这两者之间取得平衡。
本文共有四章。第一章介绍了文化负载词的定义,研究的背景、意义和目的。第二章分别介绍了文化对等概念的研究,学者们对文化负载词的分类以及对林语堂译文中的文化负载词研究。第三章分析了幽梦影中,林语堂用直译、音译和改译等方式翻译文化负载词以及取得的效果。第四章是对前文的总结并对探讨未来的研究前景。

In recent years, with the progressing of globalization and continuous increase of China’s international influence, Chinese traditional culture, literature and fine art have been introduced to the West and gained popularity in English speaking countries . However, owing to the discrepancies in history, religion and custom, cross-cultural translation is faced with great challenges. With timely-honored history and civilization, Chinese language is closely connected with its culture context, thus forming a series of unique ways of expressions like idioms and couplets and numerous genres including verses, ditties, odes and songs. Culturally-loaded words, which mean that the words from the source language have no equivalence in the target language, are the direct or indirect reflection of national culture at the lexical level. The study of culturally-loaded words is important to the translation of Chinese classics and to the recognition of Chinese literature in the world.
Quiet Dream Shadows by Zhang Chao is considered as one of the most influential aesthetic essay collections in Qing Dynasty. It contains the details of Taoism and Buddhism thought of Zen, expresses the “personality” and the self-emotion and displays the ethical pursuit of ancient Chinese people. And Lin Yutang, known for “Two feet on Chinese and western culture, with a review of the universe”, is an accomplished master in cross-cultural translation. This paper discusses Lin Yutang’s strategy of translating culturally-loaded words on the basis of his translation of Quiet Dream Shadows. Through discussing direct translation, transliteration and adaption in the book, this paper will throw light on how Lin Yutang kept a good balance between conforming to the language style of English and retaining the cultural elements from the original text.
The paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the definition of culturally-loaded words as well as the background, significance and purpose of research. The second chapter reveals the previous research on cultural equivalence, the classification of culturally-loaded words by scholars and the researches on Lin Yutang’s translation on culturally-loaded words; thus we can find research gaps based on the previous studies. The third chapter analyzes Lin Yutang’s strategies of using direct translation, transliteration and adaption to translate culturally-loaded words in Quiet Dream Shadows and the effect of using the strategies. The last chapter involves a summary of the whole research paper and prospect analysis.
