With the reform and opening up of Chinese society and the rapid development of the economy, the television medium has become one of the main ways for the public to access media content, and television dramas have taken on the role of spreading social and artistic values. Medical dramas, as a type of professional drama, focus on the work and life of medical workers, showing audiences the real medical environment and the real working conditions of medical workers, as well as highlighting the development of China's medical system. In the new media era, the introduction of feminism theory has led to more and more female workers having a voice on internet platforms, bringing the current situation of the female workplace to the attention of the media and viewers. 2020 saw the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the outstanding performance of female medical workers in the fight against the epidemic gained more attention. Based on Chinese medical drama series from 2010 onwards, this paper adopts textual analysis and comparative research methods to trace the development of medical drama series, to re-examine and re-imagine the image of women in Chinese medical drama series, and to explore the changes in women's social status, lifestyle, professional identity and values arising from the changes in the image of women in medical drama series. The thesis consists of the following sections: the introduction, the academic and practical significance of the topic, the current situation of related research at home and abroad, the theoretical framework, and the main research methods used. The first chapter defines the concept of Chinese medical drama from the origin of overseas medical drama, and compares the development history of Chinese medical drama. It also explains the connotation and extension of the portrayal of women in medical dramas. The second chapter draws on Erving Goffman's Dramaturgical Theory and, based on a study of the content of television dramas, to draw out the characteristics of the professional portrayal of women in medical dramas in the context of traditional and new mainstream values, as well as the non-professional portrayal of life, family and love. The third chapter focuses on the rising "her power" and analyses the factors that influence the image of women in Chinese medical dramas in terms of social trends, economic development and media construction. Based on the above, Chapter 4 summarises the significance of the image of women in Chinese medical dramas. On the one hand, it shows the development of China's medical environment, the increase in women's education, the breaking of public stereotypes of women by setting up role models, and the promotion of women's self-expression and self-fulfilment. On the other hand, it cannot be ignored that in the age of attention economy, the creation of female characters in Chinese medical drama series still suffers from problems such as schematization, lack of localization, and imbalance between professionalism and entertainment, which need to be solved. To sum up, this study clarify the current situation and problems of female portrayal in Chinese medical drama series, and provide an important theoretical reference and practical basis for achieving a comprehensive, innovative and valuable, female portrayal. |
