Loving-kindness  meditation  (LKM)  is  a  meditation  technique  originating  from Buddhism, aimed at cultivating the four immeasurable attitudes in individuals. Through long-term practice, it is believed to enhance happiness and improve mental well-being, producing positive effects in daily life. Recently, researchers have been exploring ways to increase the effectiveness of meditation, with a particular interest in the role of music in  emotional  regulation.  This  study  investigated  the  combined  effects  of  LKM  and music  as  intervention  by  having  participants  engage  in  self-guided  online  courses, examining their impact on work-related mental health.
Study  1  employed  a two-factor mixed design to investigate  the  differences  among LKM  with  no  music  (LKM-only),  LKM  plus  music  inducing  low-arousal  positive emotions  (e.g.,  calmness  and  relaxation),  and  LKM  plus  music  inducing  prosocial positive emotions (e.g., love and gratitude) during a single meditation practice session. The  analysis  involved  200  participants (Age:  31.68  ±  6.14;  Female:  187). The  results demonstrated that adding music could bring about more low-arousal positive emotions and  prosocial  positive  emotions  for  practitioners  without  significantly  altering  the overall difficulty of the meditation practice.
Study 2 utilized a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design, randomly assigning 579  employees  (Age:  30.88  ±  5.20;  Female:  539)  to  the  LKM-only  group,  the  LKM plus music group, and the passive control group. The study explored the effects of music on LKM, the impact of LKM on psychological factors for workplace mental health, and the underlying intervention mechanisms. The findings indicated that LKM significantly increased positive emotions, self-compassion and job satisfaction among employees. It also effectively alleviated levels of job burnout. Positive emotions and self-compassion played mediating roles in the improvement of job burnout and job satisfaction. However, no  significant  impact  of  LKM  on  prosocial  motivation  was  observed.  Additionally, there  was  no  additive  effect  of  the  components  when  adding  music  during  the intervention process.
In conclusion, music had a facilitating effect on a single session of LKM but did not  show  additional  benefits  for  a  multi-week  LKM  intervention.  LKM  intervention yielded positive effects on employee mental well-being, mediated by positive emotions and self-compassion. This study provides empirical support for the practical application of LKM in the workplace and offers directions for future research on the role of music in  LKM.  Future  researchers  may  further  explore  the  impact  of  music  on  LKM  and develop more targeted intervention strategies for workplace employees, providing more practical guidance to LKM.
