Qingzhen Ci has the characteristics of deep wording, cohesive words, and meticulous syntax, using soft and euphemistic language to express deep emotions.  It is the result of further refinement of poetry in the Northern Song Dynasty. During the change of dynasties between the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the idea of "emotion and vulgarity" in Ming ci criticism was basically inherited by Yunjian, Guangling and other schools, but they also began to pursue subtle and elegant poetry styles. Roughly speaking, they respected Zhou Bangyan's ci for its ability to integrate emotion into writing without revealing. The later Yangxian poetry school, due to the background of resisting the rule of the Qing Dynasty, demanded that ci play a social role of "preserving the classics and history". Therefore, Zhou Bangyan's poetry was regarded as vulgar. As the rule of the Qing Dynasty became increasingly consolidated, poetry returned to the tradition of elegant poetry education. The Zhexi school dominated the ci circle of the Qing Dynasty for nearly a hundred years because it met the needs of ruling ideology. Its theory of poetry emphasized the purity and elegance of form, but downplayed the expression of emotions. Zhou's ci was praised for its classic and exquisite characteristics, but there were differences in the concept of elegance. The Zhexi school also criticized Zhou Bangyan's vulgarity from the perspective of personal morality. After the decline of the prosperous Kangxi-Qianlong era, the Changzhou school began to emphasize ci as a reflection, and combined with the gentle tradition of Confucian poetry education, regarded subtle and profound reflection as elegant ci. Therefore, Changzhou poets highly praised Zhou Bangyan's deep wording and tactful style. However, Liu Xizai, who was not from Changzhou, strictly criticized Zhou Bangyan's ci for its vulgarity according to the standard of Confucian moral evaluation. Wang Guowei gave different evaluations to Zhou's poetry due to his hesitation between "elegance" tradition and Western theories. The distinctive characteristics of Qing Dynasty ci critism in evaluating Qingzhen Ci are not only caused by Zhou's diverse artistic characteristics, but also influenced by changing ideas about elegance and vulgarity in different eras.
